E2 1040 came into service in 1910 as E 1040. SJ ordered 130 pieces of this type between 1908 and 1920.
In 1937 a number of E-types was modified by adding an extra axle because of the uncomfortable running at higher speeds. Due to the change in the weightbalance the boiler was shifted 25 cm foreward and counterweights were placed in front of the smokebox to get sufficient axle load on the new axle. So the new 2-8-0 type of SJ was named E2. Another benefit was that the maximum speed could be increased to 70 km/h.
In the period 1935-1951 some 90 E-types were modified this way. Our engine was modified in 1946 and has been equiped with a new welded boiler in 1959.
The E2-types have been in service with SJ until 1972, after which they went into strategic military reserve.
E2 1040 is bought in 1998 by ZLSM and is transported by rail from Sweden, through Germany, to Simpelveld. She became the oldest steamlocomotive of ZLSM.
